Cuban seed cigars are made with tobacco grown from seeds descended from Cuban varieties, but the tobacco is grown and the cigars are rolled outside Cuba. The seed is Cuban in origin. The soil, climate, farming and factory are not.

Why Cuban Seed Exists

After the Cuban Revolution and the trade embargo, many Cuban tobacco growers and cigar makers left the island. They took their knowledge, and often their seeds, to countries such as the Dominican Republic, Honduras and Nicaragua. Their families and the companies built on that knowledge still make cigars today.

Where They Are Grown

An authentic Cuban cigar is grown and hand-rolled in Cuba, with the finest tobacco coming from the Vuelta Abajo region in Pinar del Río. A Cuban seed cigar is grown elsewhere, so even with the same seed lineage, the tobacco tastes different.

Why the Taste Differs

Soil, climate, altitude, curing and aging all shape a tobacco leaf. Seed is only one factor. The same Cuban seed planted in Nicaragua or Honduras produces a different flavor than it does in Cuba, which is why many smokers compare the two styles rather than treating them as the same product.
